We’re in the midst of an information war, and our democracy doesn’t have a game plan.
An information war is a coordinated attack on truth. But most people still see this through a "left vs right" lens—as if we're debating policy differences between liberals and conservatives.
That frame doesn't match reality anymore. The modern right has abandoned conservatism for authoritarianism—using fear, chaos, and conspiracy to justify stripping rights and consolidating power. Meanwhile, the left remains fractured and hesitant, clinging to civility politics while democracy burns.
One side runs a coordinated assault. The other won't even name what's happening. That's how democracies fall.
As of 2024, there are more autocracies than democracies worldwide—91 autocracies compared to 88 democracies—marking the first time in over two decades that autocracies are in the majority¹.
When truth becomes relative, power becomes absolute.
The right uses culture wars to normalize hate, disinformation to erode truth, and coordinated media strategies to divide and distract the masses.
This strategy doesn’t just cultivate a culture of systemic apathy and overwhelm; it also systemically isolates, radicalizes, and disorients. It floods our feeds with lies and scapegoats minority communities for the problems it creates. It convinces people that nothing can be trusted—not institutions, not experts, not even each other.
And when truth becomes relative, power becomes absolute — because authoritarianism thrives in this confusion, and right now Canada doesn’t have a coordinated counterforce.

The right has dominated the digital public square, spreading disinformation that divides and distracts us, eroding our civic muscles — C4H aims to coordinate a national group project to combat disinformation. To do so we need the ability to resource labour, access to ways to take action, reach and trust on the digital public square
